This is a Roping saddle set in Natural.  I did a hand tooling design in a floral and added a diamond stamp to the edges.

Here it is up close so you can see the detail in the leather.

The Bridle is a Hackamore from RDLC company.

The Ropers Breast collar is heavy duty looking.  It will hold the saddle in place for roping.

Wow that saddle is beautiful! When showing breyer horses in western classes, do you have to have silver on them? And also, how did you make those ruber bell boots? The entire set -- horse,doll,tack-- looks really nice!

I'm Going to buy a rio rondo western saddle kit, are there any tips you could give me? My dad has a bunch of leather stamps so he and I could do that toghter AND I have some black leather dye that I'm going to use. Also, -- I think this is probably the important part, I plan on making it a roping or reining saddle + I LOVE making those little boots!

Western Tack by Marilyn Fowler said...

Hello Devon,

I'm thrilled to hear that you are going to make tack! It is a challenging art but you can do it.

When showing in any event the tack is very important. It must fit properly, be clean and neat, and correct for the event. Let's take barrel racing for an example. You wouldn't use a Western Pleasure show saddle that is used in the Western Pleasure class. You would us a barrel racing saddle. We learn from the real horse world and what is used on the horses for the events they are entered in. Study the real horses and you will learn what is proper.

The rubber boots I bought on MH$P. I can't remember who makes them. As for the skid boots and front leg protection I made those too. They are not hard to make. RioRondo sells the pattern for skid boots. Proper leg protection is a must for showing performance.
Again,study for correctness.

The RioRondo kit for a western saddle has everythng you need to make one. Follow the instructions carefully. Cut out your pieces first, then stamp it, then die both sides. Seal the leather with Tan Kote from RioRondo. Make sure the stamps are very small. Remember you are making it to look real. For a roping saddle set you will need to make a tie down, and a breast collar that is for roping. Look at my set and you will see what I mean. The tack has to be strong enough to hold a 500 lb calf or a steer if team roping. If for reining, most don't use a breast collar. Some reining saddles have silver, again , check out the Reining saddle for the Rose Reiner.

I also want to thank you for your kind words, be sure an post pics of your work.

If I can help in any way, lmk!

Wow thank you so much! Another detail that I left out is that I'm 12 but since I'm doing horse back riding lessons in November I will look at the western saddles. Until then, I'll buy the western saddle kit and maybe the accessories kit, but normally I can figure something out by just cutting up a peice of paper and looking at a real picture! I really want to do something cow related since I love painting and when my dad was a teen, he owned a young heifer named babe! So I want to do a custom breyer cow and name it babe!

So yes I see exactly what you mean about the fact that you really just have to study the real thing.

Thank you so much for posting on this blog so often, I realy appreciate it!

Glad to help, and good luck on the tack making. I love the cows, they are fun to use in the set ups. I think babe is a great name for the cow you want to CM. Good luck at the shows!
